What the classes cover

More than rhythm โ€” the foundation of the band

The bass guitar is not a simplified guitar. It has its own technique, its own theory, its own role in an ensemble โ€” and learning it properly means understanding groove, pocket, and how to lock in with a drummer. Students who come from a guitar background are often surprised by how different the discipline is.

๐ŸŽต

Technique and tone

Right-hand technique (fingerstyle and pick), left-hand fretting, muting, and understanding how tone changes with playing position. Bass tone is as important as pitch โ€” we cover it from the start.

๐Ÿฅ

Rhythm and groove

Bass playing is fundamentally rhythmic. We work on locking in with a drum pattern, understanding subdivisions, and developing the internal pulse that makes a bassist reliable in a band context.

๐ŸŽผ

Reading and theory

Bass is notated in bass clef. Students learn to read bass clef notation, understand chord tones, and apply basic harmony to bass line construction. Theory from guitar transfers โ€” bass clef is new learning.

Taught by working musicians

Bass guitar at FSG is taught by a working bassist โ€” someone who plays in bands, understands groove, and knows what it takes to be a reliable band musician. The curriculum reflects that.

Bass guitar โ€” on stage

Bass guitar students perform at FSG annual recitals and concerts โ€” playing in ensembles and bands, not just as soloists.

The instrument โ€” bass guitar at FSG

FSG has a bass guitar available for use during class sessions. Students do not need to purchase their own to start โ€” use ours while you find your feet. If you already have a bass or choose to buy one, bring it along.

๐ŸŽธ

Bass guitar provided at class

You do not need to own a bass guitar to start or continue classes at FSG. A bass is available for use during sessions. If you want to buy your own, we will advise on what suits your level and goals.

๐Ÿ“–

Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus

Trinity Rock & Pop is one of the most practical exam pathways available for electric bass โ€” the repertoire is contemporary, the skills are directly applicable to real band playing, and the grade structure gives students a clear progression route.

๐ŸŽต

Ensemble and band playing

Bass is most meaningful in context. Where possible, we create opportunities for bass students to play with other FSG students โ€” guitar, drums, keys โ€” so the instrument makes sense in the way it's actually used.

Bass Guitar FAQ

Questions about bass guitar classes

Do I need to have played guitar first? +
Grade 5 Guitar is the prerequisite โ€” any style (classical, acoustic or electric). The physical transition to bass is straightforward for a guitarist. The biggest adjustment is mental: bass is a support instrument, not a lead instrument, and that requires a different musical mindset.
Do I need to buy a bass guitar? +
No. A bass is provided at class for use during sessions. If you want to buy your own โ€” which we encourage for home practice โ€” we will advise on specific models once you are enrolled.
What amp do I use? +
FSG has amplification available for bass sessions. You do not need to bring an amp. If you have a bass and want to practise at home, a small practice amp (15โ€“30W) is sufficient for bedroom use.
Is there a grade exam for bass guitar? +
Yes โ€” Trinity Rock & Pop has a full bass guitar pathway from Initial to Grade 8. Trinity Rock & Pop bass guitar exams can be taken as a face-to-face exam or as a digital submission โ€” students prepare and record their exam performances here.
Can I join bass if I play electric guitar here? +
Yes โ€” Electric guitar at Grade 5 qualifies as the prerequisite. If you are already studying electric guitar at FSG and want to add bass, speak to us about scheduling.
